The Pre-Professional Empowerment Program (PPEP) is a community-to-vocation education program providing aspiring nurses the opportunity to participate in live-in/on-site healthcare training at the Cross of Christ Hospital in Akute, Ogun State, Nigeria. The program prepares young women from the township of Imesi-Ile, Osun State, Nigeria, a rural village with approximately 14,000 in population, for an educational and professional career in healthcare. While in PPEP the trainee will enroll in a certificate program in healthcare, shadowing on-site professionals and engaging in practicum-like training at the community-based facility. To supplement the trainee’s rurality, the training will emphasize healthcare in an urban setting, prioritizing the trainee’s exposure to the variations and complexities that exist within an urban area such as Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city and a municipal neighbor to Akute. Upon completion of the program, the trainee will be well-equipped for future aspirations in healthcare.
